JAMES DICKSON INNES (1887-1914). THE ALHAMBRA, LONDON. Pen and black in and pencil 17.5 x 12cm. The subject relates to a similar drawing in Tate Britain, c.1912. In addition, a smaller drawing of the Alhambra was in the collection Mrs Ceinwen Thomas in 1958. John Fothergill, `James Dickson Innes` (publ. Faber & Faber, 1946, pl.33) reproduces a painting At the Theatre c. 1912. The Alhambra was a well-known London music hall on the site now occupied by the Odeon Cinema, Leicester Square. It was built in 1854, destroyed by fire in 1882, rebuilt in 1884 and demolished in 1936. Provenance: London, The Redfern Gallery Ltd, September 1942, where purchased by Lt. Col. J. Bramwell Jones (and thence by gift and descent).
