August Friedrich Schenck (Denmark, 1828 - France, 1901) A shepherdess and her flock in a snowy landscape signed lower left oil on canvas 71 x 90cm. Provenance: recorded at Christie's, London, Scandinavian Pictures, Drawings, Prints and Sculpture, 16 March 1989, lot 142 Denmark-born Schenck trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and made his exhibition debut at the Paris World Exhibition of 1855. Settling permanently in France, Schenck became well-known for his paintings of animals and particularly sheep in adverse conditions, which were often read as metaphors for human struggles. His most famous composition, Anguish, which depicts a sheep mourning her lamb, is in the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia.
