Arnhem POW's range of items attributed to 5048129 C.S.M. W. Wallis who was wounded during the fighting at Arnhem and was taken Prisoner of war on 25th September 1944, with:
1. Hand written letter on 3rd Bn Parachute Regiment headed paper from Capt W.H. Robinson to Wallis's father. The letter is dated in error 5 Jan 44 (Sic 45). "Dear Mr Wallis, I was very pleased to see that your son had been reported officially as a prisoner. I would have written to you earlier, but thought it better to wait until the official news had reached you.
He did splendidly at Arnhem. On the first afternoon he was wounded in the leg - a clean flesh wound near the calf - and continued with the Coy marching another six to seven miles.
He fought in a school building with what remained of the Coy until the building was burnt down on the Wed afternoon and then when it was necessary to hand over the wounded to the enemy, he attempted to escape with the few who were fit.
They were caught about an hour later. I saw him when he was a prisoner and he was quite all right. His leg wound had been dressed by a doctor and there was no need to worry. I hope this will be of some help to you."
2. Rare book "3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment 1st British Airborne Division "Not In Vain" 17th-25th September 1944" which was produced by the battalion for members who came back from Arnhem. Book is complete with the original compliments card and card postal cover addressed to Mr Wallace (sic), 85 Alfreton Road, Nottingham.
3. Pewter musical tankard with Para Regt badge fitted to the front and engraved "Presented to C.S.M. W. WALLIS by THE W.O.'S & SGTS 18TH BN PARACHUTE REGIMENT on leaving the Regiment".
4. Parachute Regiment book mark, reverse written "All the best XMAS 1973."
With copied casualty roll. (½B)
