£900
Half-Dollar, George III counterfeit octagonal countermark (note the crude hairlines as opposed to curls) on a genuine Madrid 4 Reales 1796 M MF, VF with a small scuff obverse. The countermark is a contemporary counterfeit, which on a 4-Reales/Half Dollar added about one and half pence to the value of the coin. Genuine countermarks have an intricate portrait, as used on the Maundy coinage, and were difficult to reproduce; see Spink illustration 3755 for example.
