A 19TH CENTURY IMPERIAL GLASS WORKS GOBLET, of cylindrical form, raised on a faceted stem, on a circular foot with pie-crust edge and a protruding diamond cut band to the bottom and the top engraved all around. To one side a depiction of the Alexander Column in front of the Guard Headquarters on the Palace Square at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, the reverse with a pair of doves in flight holding ribbons above a monogram of two A’s, and dated August 30th, 1834, Toga, with further foliage detail beneath.
On August 30th (11 September) 1834 at the Palace Square in St. Petersburg took place a grand opening of the Alexander Column, a column dedicated to the victory of the Russian army over Napoleon’s French forces and is devoted to Tsar Alexander I of Russia.
A beautiful example of glass work of this period, in excellent condition.
Provenance: Acquired in Russia before 1946 by the Norwegian Commercial Attaché in Moscow Einar Krane (1885–1958) and his Russian wife Ekaterina Krane (1885–1974). Purchased at Bruun Rasmussen, December 2017 by current vendor.
