VENEREAL DISEASES ... a collection of over twenty pamphlets bound in one volume. Acts of the 1860s. half calf, 8vo.* The book includes contemporary pamphlets/reports relating to the Contagious Diseases Acts introduced to control Venereal Diseases in 1864. Many of the pamphlets are by Elizabeth Garrett, Josephine Butler, etc. including a presentation copy suggesting ''Controlling Men As Well As Women.'' Also included are a number of related loose pieces ... ''Liberty of the Subject : How ''Prostitutes are treated.'' Etc. Josephine Butler led the campaign and was successful in having the Acts repelled in 1886. She was a supporter of the Suffragette movement, a social reformer and champion of women's rights. She is particularly noted for her work with prostitutes and the prevention of child prostitution. She was also involved in raising the age of consent for girls, from 13 to 16.
