A 19TH CENTURY CLAY INDIAN FIGURE ATTRIBUTED TO JADUNATH PAL (1821-1920).
Made in Krishnanagar (near Calcutta), West Bengal, an area where figurative modelling flourished from the early 18th Century, the naturalistic figures are representations of life and culture during colonial rule. Sculpted with clay modelled on metal armature, hand-painted and applied with human hair. The garments were woven to fit the scale of the model. The models were deliberately unfired to preserve the soul of the figure.
