TORTOLA - INCOMING FREE FRANK FROM G.B. (ADJUTANT GENERAL) WITH "1 bit" CHARGE EXPLAINED; Long 18 May 1808 free front + one side-flap (some creases but attractive) from London endorsed "Adjutant General's Office" and "O.H.M.S." on the front with very fine crowned London "FREE" d.s. but most exceptionally addressed to "Officer Commanding 70th Regiment, Island of St. Thomas" and yet having the distinctive manuscript Tortola "1 bit" charge at top right; the side-flap has a contemporary note; "The postage ch[arge]d. at Tortola is 1 bit at the upper right corner. L.G.". The only ingoing free frank to the British Virgin Islands that we have recorded; presumably the 70th Regiment had moved there from St. Thomas not long before this letter arrived.
