Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland by the Four Masters from the earliest period to the year 1616. Edited by John O'Donovan. The bundle consists of Vol I pp xlix, 797; Vol II 798-1629; Vol III 1632-2498. All three volumes ‘Printed for The Very Rev. Dominick O'Brien, Original Subscriber'. O'Brien was Secretary at the Synod of Thurles and later Bishop of Waterford. All three volumes have been rebacked with backstrips relaid. Vol I - backstrip almost complete; Vol II - title and editor only surviving; Vol III - complete. New endpapers for all three volumes. Some wear/rubbing/soiling to patterned boards. Page edge repairs to prelims in Vol II. Otherwise binding and text in very good condition. Begins in the year 1172 and runs to 1616. Two earlier volumes began with The Deluge - given as 2,242 years after the Creation of the World. Also included is an 1851 edition of Vol II with an Index of Places and Names - for six volumes (pp 405) also printed for Rev. Dominick O'Brien, along with title pages for Vols III, IV, V,VI & VII bound-in. This volume also has bound-in an assortment of pages from other volumes. Finally 'Directions to the Binder' for the seven volumes - the seventh being the Index. pp 816-1193. Spine relaid - new endpapers. Unopened along top edge. Large Quarto
