WHITE STAR LINE/R.M.S. TITANIC: A legacy of the Titanic disaster: lifeboats crowding the decks of the Majestic in August 1912, making a promenade impossible. White Star managing director J. Bruce Ismay announced on landfall in New York in April that his company would henceforth carry boats for all and this is the result. Titanic however sank in calm sea and barely managed to get away sixteen standard lifeboats in two hours, forty minutes. Many felt a panoply of extra boats was a further risk in any other emergency and there were claims they could make vessels top heavy. An exclusive image by Philip Agathos Bell in trimmed RP postcard form, capturing a moment of bureaucracy gone mad.
