Desmond Morris (1928- ) British. "Red Riding Shock", Oil on canvas, Signed with initials and dated '62, and signed, inscribed and dated on stretcher, 16" x 44" (40.6 x 111.8cm), together with the Catalogue Raisonee. Literature: Silvano Levy, 'Analytical Catalogue Raisonne', 2001. P.252, No. 1962/17 'Morris regarded the work as unfinished and commented that he will 'probably continue to repaint it and never get it right'. The painting is based on the theme of Little Red Riding Hood. A small figure in a red cloak stares at a gigantic equine quadruped with a large pair of testicles. Morris was inspired to paint this grotesque horse by the photograph 'Desert' (1952) by Sidney Nolan which depicts a hardened, desiccated horse propped up on its legs. Incongruity is created by the juxtaposition of the moribund horse and vital reproductive organs'.
