A fine large antique mezzo tint by the artist John Cother Webb (b.1855 d.1927), showing ancient Roman ruins in a Mediterranean landscape. Merrymakers enhjoy a bathe in the stream while a courting couple recline on the river bank, surrounded by a lush and historic landscape. Hand signed bottom right in pencil. Webb's work sells well at auction, fetching prices in the mid hundreds.

John Cother Webb was an English engraver and mezzotint artist who was born in Torquay, 1855. He has been nicknamed the "Doyen" of English mezzotint artists. As a student of Thomas Landseer, he was largely responsible for the promotion of the mezzotint as a desireable item for collecting. Webb died in London, 1927. Webb has international recognition both in the museum and auction industries, with works in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum.
