A very unusual possibly 18th century Chinese folding paper fan, the double leaf mounted on wood sticks lacquered in black and gold, featuring a wealthy couple in sumptuous gowns, their faces delicately painted, panels of mica overlaid on the gowns, panels of straw applied to the skirt borders and sleeves, the floral garden with small pagoda, one section applied with mica, the window of which is mesh, thus proving a peep hole for the wearer, the reserves with gold highlights, most flowers having the addition of coloured dots, the verso is plain save for an applied label referring to G Giroux et Cie, rue du Fau, St Honoré, 7, à Paris, guard approx. 27 cm; together with an empty 19th c Chinese fan box, black lacquer, lightly decorated in gold, inner lid with painting of flowers and an exotic bird, front catch, length approx.30 cm ( 1 + box)
Box lacking one hinge, the second requiring repair. Unfitted. some light foxing to the fan, a split in the mesh window, some straw panels missing from the robe hems.
