A late 18th century 'Nelson' Service Paris porcelain dinner plate, the border with brightly enamelled oak leaves and gilded acorns, inter spaced with two panels of blue swags and gilt inscriptions, both with the name 'Nelson' one inscribed 'Baltic' and the other '14th February', in enamel colours and gilding over a lightly printed outline, 22.7cm diameter. (some rubbing and chips) * Notes- The origin of the Nelson set is unknown but it is probable that it was presented to Nelson in 1802 by the City of London. In that year Nelson was invited to ride in the Lord Mayor's coach in the inaugural procession of the Lord Mayor. The date of 14th February commemorates the Battle of Cape St Vincent It is possible that the City of London commissioned the set from a London china shop with its own decorating workshop. Much of the set was of Coalport porcelain, as the Coalport factory was the main supplier of 'blanks' for London decorators.
