** WALES - MONTGOMERY/ABERGAVENNY - INTER-P.O.W. LETTER WITH CENSOR ENDORSEMENT & "TRANSPORT OFFICE..." OVAL; Remarkable and attractive 27 Apr. 1812 EL (minor creasing) from one French Parole POW Officer to another (both of the same 14th Cavalry Regiment); sent from "Montgomery" to "Bergaveni" which was mistaken as a town in France so the letter was endorsed "Not Paid" in red on the front and endorsed "Fra[nci]s. Allen" and sent to London where a mainly very fine oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" mark was applied before it was eventually realised (after more than a year! - fine 6 May 1813 London cds on reverse) that it was intended for Wales, and duly endorsed "Abergavenny" on the front. The writer gives news of some of their fellow-officers and asks if the addressee can get himself transferred to Montgomery , etc. One of only two recorded Montgomery POW covers and the only one addressed to another POW (the other cover is to France). Unique Welsh POW item of Exhibition Quality. [See MFPWE, p. 145.]Cross Reference: WELSH POSTAL HISTORY, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, MILITARY - CENSORED MAIL, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY
