** TIVERTON (DEVON) - PAROLE P.O.W. LETTER WITH "CP/L Cartel" & "TE" (T. ENCHMARSHAT) CENSOR INITIALS; 6 June 1810 EL (unsealed; internal reinforced damp-stain does not affect address panel - part of one flap lost) from POW "Auguste de Mallis" on parole in "Tiverton" thanking the addressee for sending some money but asking in detail for his help in securing a prisoner exchange; he also asks him for news of his own family back in France. It was probably sent via London to Plymouth from where it was taken to an unidentified French port and so was charged "5" then "6" (decimes). Of much greater significance, however, are the manuscript initials "TE" above the address with "CP/L Cartel" written alongside; this was done by the Tiverton Censor, Thomas Enchmarshat [see MFPWE, p.215] and the "CP/L" (only 4 other examples recorded) is thought to mean Cartel mail of Prisoner, via London. Only one other example of this endorsement with the "TE" censor initials has been recorded (25 Jan. 1812; sold for £700+BP in Cavendish's 4 Dec. 2019 auction, lot 183. [See MFPWE, p.133.]Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - CENSORED MAIL, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, DEVON
