William Raymond Hemsley was a native of Derby, the son of Christopher and Maud. He lived with his wife Jenny in Normanton, Derby. Flight Sergeant Hemsley was a Navigator on 53 Squadron, which operated Blenheims in 1940.

On the 7th of December 1940, Hemsley, along with PO Steel and Air gunner Robson, were conducting a reconnaissance operation to the Hook of Holland in Blenheim IV T2395.

On their return, it seems they hit a barrage balloon cable, with Hemsley and Steel being killed instantly and Robson badly injured.

William is buried in Derby Cemetery.
