Eugene Andrew Cernan (1934-2017) – American Astronaut, Commander for the Apollo XVII (1972) lunar landing mission. The 11th man to walk on the moon. Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan signed large format colour photograph, signed in silver marker “Gene Cernan cdr Apollo XVII”. Official Nasa image of commander Cernan near the American flag with the Earth in the background. This was the only Apollo landing mission at a high enough latitude and time of day for the Earth to be photographed with an astronaut in the picture. Apollo 17 landed in the spectacular Taurus-Littrow region, with towering mountains, large rocks, and deep valleys. Cernan and geologist Jack Schmitt spent almost 22 hours outside in three days exploring this region. Cernan was the last man to leave his footprints on the moon in the 20th Century.
