** GOSPORT (HANTS.)/ABERGAVENNY (WALES) - RARE INTER CAMP COVER FROM ONE P.O.W. TO ANOTHER; 10 June 1811 EL (a couple of small reinforced faults) sent from "Mr. Archambault, prisonnier de Guerre a Forton pres Gosport" addressed to "M. de Barral officier au 14eme Regiment de Chasseurs, prisonnier de Guerre sur Parole a Abergavenny, Monmouth". It was carried privately by another French P.O.W. Officer in contravention of the Transport Office regulations, and as such is a rare example of an uncensored POW letter. POW covers to Abergavenny are rare and we cannot recall having seen any other POW covers to or from Forton. The writer offers to lend the addressee £5 or £6 if it will help him in any way, even though they had only met briefly at Forton. [Not recorded in MFPWE, although another cover to Barral in Abergavenny (Apr. 1812) is recorded on p. 145.]Cross Reference: MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, WELSH POSTAL HISTORY, HAMPSHIRE, MILITARY - P.O.W.
