1840 (Jan. 10th) Uniform One Penny Postage. Small unpaid part wrapper with flaps trimmed and sent on the first day of the new penny post rate from London to Baldock, Hitchin with manuscript '2' at right as the cover was unpaid and the postage charge upon arrival was double the new rate of postage, With a blue bloxed ‘Torrington Pl’ handstamp and cancelled on reverse JA.10.1840. first day of the uniform penny post. Unpaid letters are very scarce.
