** LEEK (STAFFS.) - "LE BAGOT" PAROLE P.O.W. LETTER ENDORSED "Not Paid. Chas. Grey Agent" BY CENSOR; Very fine 29 Nov. 1812 EL (long typed transcript; wafer seal) from POW "Le Bagot" on parole in "Leek" to a friend in Nantes (surprisingly Missent to "MANTES" - faint mark on flap). Unusually it has been endorsed "Not Paid" and "Single. Chas. Grey" [the Transport Office Agent and censor for Leek Parole POWs]; it was charged "10" (decimes) on delivery, probably having been routed via London and Rotterdam. It concerns the writer's recent exchange for a British naval officer that had fallen through because they were not of exactly equal rank. He also recommends sending letters via the manager of the Hotel L'Europe in Morlaix; "There is a Dame Herau at Morlaix running the Hotel d'Europe whose husband is here; when I was in France [perhaps on compassionate leave while still a POW?] I brought her a letter from her husband. By writing to her postage paid, I have no doubt that she will send me your letters." [See MFPWE, p.152.]
