AN INTERESTING COLLECTION OF FIRST WORLD WAR LETTERS, PHOTOGRAPHS AND SUPPORTING MATERIAL FROM AN OFFICER IN THE GREEN HOWARDS. A collection of twenty nine Great War period letters sent between Major Arthur Cyril Lawes Parry MBE MC and Dorothy Forseter. The letters containing interesting, apparently uncensored, details of Major Forester's time at the front, training and on leave. All with envelopes, fifteen further family letters, two portrait photographs in uniform, other images etc.
Initially with the 3rd Bn Yorkshire Regiment, later 9th Battalion letters deal with the routine of training at Bramshot, frenetic activity once orders to travel abroad were received, inspection by the King, descriptions of actions and bombardments 'of course the whole place is one lake of mud', and more upsetting news relayed in the same matter of fact manner (October 1st 1915) 'I killed my first German yesterday he was a sniper and I spotted him with my field glasses sitting in a tree. I had three shots at him & he tumbled out at the third'. 'the German trenches were only 60 yards away from ours . Our usual afternoon & evenings amusement consisted in throwing bombs at them and of course they threw them back'. Other accounts including being fired on by his own men when returning from a spying mission, being awarded the MC, his pistol discharging by accident, training and later fighting in Salonika.
A fascinating, legible and surprisingly frank collection of letters from a decorated young officer wh received the MBE and MC. With partial transcriptions and photocopied notes. *CR Letters largely in good condition, envelopes frayed, photographs with damage to edges in places.
