Robert Brown: 'The Races of Mankind: being a popular description of the characteristics, manners and customs of the principalities of the Human Family.', London, Cassell, Petter, & Galpin, [1873], 1st edition, 4 volumes, full page wood wood engraved plates and numerous illustrations in text throughout, uniform original cloth gilt. Including a detailed account of the peoples of the Americas in volume one; the peoples of the Pacific and North Africa in volume 2; of Asia in volume 3; and West Africa and the Middle East in volume 4. Brown was a fellow of the "Royal Geographical Society and served on its council. He was also president of the Royal Physical Society of Edinburgh, vice-president of the Institute of Journalists, and fellow of many other learned societies. He is commemorated by Brown's Range, Mount Brown, and Brown's River in Vancouver Island, and by Cape Brown in Svalbard and Brown Island north of Novaya Zemlya, as well as by two flowering plants, two lichens, and a fossil plant (4)
