George Davenport was born at Wigston near Leicester in 1782 and married Jane Devereux Davis (b.1778) in London in 1805, moving to Oxford soon afterwards. George became a prominent local financier and businessman, both as a co-founder of bankers Davenport, Walker & Co, and as a director of the South Australian Company. Jane died in 1840 and George in 1846. Their eleven children included John Marriott Davenport, who served over fifty years as Clerk of the Peace for Oxfordshire; and Sir Samuel Davenport, who was knighted for his lifetime's work in South Australia's agricultural and political development.
