AN IMPRESSIVE CARVED ZITAN THRONE CHAIR
MID-QING PERIOD
紫檀雕龙椅 清中期
the shaped stepped back and sides finely carved in high relief with meandering leafy lotus scrolls, surmounted by two stylised archaistic confronting dragons, over a solid panelled seat and a conforming relief carved apron, on shaped-square section legs united by a peripheral stretcher and ending in four short feet 
100cm wide, 107cm high, 67.5cm deep

PROVENANCE: From the Martin Laing Collection Part II. 

NOTE: This zitan chair was acquired by Martin during the 1990's, when he bought the chair it was painted black. His restorer took around one year to complete the paint removal, due to discovering that it had previously been painted as many four times.

Of good overall appearance. The back and both arms each have repaired old splits. The left arm also has an upright join, most probably made that way. The rear left leg with fragmented timbers/carving which has been repaired using filler. Old marks and scratches.
The upper part of the apron beneath the seat is replaced
