Sentinel Head, Millenium and Interlocking Abstract are three very different sculptures. Their forms differ, the material changes, yet they all demonstrate a sensitivity and ‘Africaness’ that is uniquely Anton Smit. Anton Smit is a South African artist whose practice predominantly centres around sculpture. He moulds, folds, breaks, fires and paints until he finds harmony with his material. These three sculptures clearly illustrate the diverse approach he has to his process as each figure is made of a different substance, namely cement fondant, sandstone, and plaster of paris. Each of Smit’s sculptures are displayed on a different base, accentuating the different forms moulded by Smit. Their size defies the historical conception of sculpture as these pieces are not bound to one specific site or period of history. They live in whatever environment they are displayed, and their meaning is determined from within.
