A long service group of three medals to the Royal Air Force consisting of The Defence Medal and War Medal 1939/45 and the RAF Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, GVR second type, this named to 337596 F Sgt T W Twigg RAF.
F Sgt Twigg enlisted in the RAF in 1919 and was awarded the RAF LS&GC in October 1937. This is the much less common GVR type, although King George VI was on the throne by the time of the award and so presumably existing stock of GVR medals was being used up. Twigg was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer on 26 September 1939 and was serving at RAF Gutersloh in western Germany, after the end of the Second World War.
Gutersloh airfield is situated close to the German/Dutch border and was used by the German Luftwaffe in 1944-45 as a night fighter base, operating Junkers JU-88 aircraft of Jagdgeschwader 2 against British and US strategic bombing, as part of their ‘defence of the Reich’ aerial campaign. The airfield was captured by the Americans in April 1945 and handed over to the RAF as part of the formation of the British Occupation Zone of Germany in June 1945. It was used by the RAF as an operational fighter base (part of 2nd Allied Tactical Air Force) until the 1990s. The medals are in Good Very Fine (GVF) condition and mounted for display, together with W/O Twigg’s leave pass from RAF Gutersloh dated 04/01/1949 and his original WW2 fibre identity discs
