JAMES KINNEAR (1817-1917). 'The Steekit Yetts, Traquair House, Peeblesshire, signed and date 1904, watercolour, 9 x 12 1/2 in
Traquair House is claimed to be the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland. However the name of Traquair House is associated in the public mind perhaps not so much with the house as with its famous entrance. 'The Steekit Yetts' lying at the end of a quarter-mile tree flanked avenue. There according to family tradition and legend , perhaps one of the most romantic in Scottish history the gates were closed one late autumn day by the 5th Earl of Traquair after wishing his guest Prince Charles Edward Stuart, a safe journey, with the promise that the gates would not be re-opened until the Stuarts were restored to the Throne.
