Railway Interest: A unique & important archive of ephemera relating to John Crabtree (1846 to 1929) Manager of the Great Northern & Great Eastern Joint Railway and inventor of “Crabtree’s Mechanical Coupler” & Crabtrees’s “New Signal Indicator”. The collection comprises original printed drawings of “Crabtrees Patent” original printed Specification dated 1886, original albumen photographs of the invention, several copies of original advertisements for the invention. The collection also includes personal papers and correspondence of John Crabtree: His printed Testimonials from 1862 to 1882; invoices to Crabtree 1882 re lessons on an organ together with correspondence about purchase & sale of an organ; family correspondence re hardship & request for financial assistance; correspondence re purchasing of shares of the Colne Valley & Halstead Railway Company (1883); Railway correspondence on Great Eastern Railway headed paper (1884); a cheque for £5.00 from National Deposit Bank (1882); correspondence from London pharmacists with prescriptions (1881 -1884); receipt for a Cashmere overcoat from J W Dore, Court Tailor, Piccadilly; receipts from The Midland Grand Hotel, St Pancras, Fitch & Sons Auctioneers Suffolk (1882); correspondence from the Office of the Superintendent of The Great Northern Railway 1885; Carte de visite photographs presumably Crabtree family.
