John Dibblee Crace (British, 1838-1919) From the reign of George III until the end of the Victorian era, the Crace family designed some of England's most notable Royal and noble interiors. Known for his successful interpretations of the historic Pompeian, Neoclassical and Gothic styles, John Dibblee Crace's most famous decorating schemes include the National Gallery, Royal Academy and British Museum, London, as well as notable country houses such as Longleat and Tyntesfield. Designs akin to the drawings presented here are in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York The following three lots of drawings from Crace's interior design studio have come to us from a private Devon collection. John Dibblee Crace (British, 1838-1919) Three architectural designs watercolour, bodycolour and pencil on paper to include; A design for an entrance hall with arcading and coffered ceiling, 38 x 24cm; design for a decorated corridor in Renaissance style, with columns and elaborate cornice decoration of grotesques bearing an indistinct watermark for CRACE & SON in the lower right corner, 27 x 49cm; and a design for a corridor in Neoclassical style with panelled door and Greek key decoration, indistinct inscription to lower left, 28 x 42cm (3) Provenance: Christie's London, 13 December 1988, Lots 121 and 122 Private Collection
