** MOSELLE P.O.W. EXCHANGED IN ERROR - OFFICIAL LETTER TO PARIS MINISTRY WITH "TRANSPORT OFFICE..." OVAL; Very fine 9 Aug. 1813 EL (unsealed) to the Minister of War in Paris with no postal charges of either country from the Transport Office in London with a partly fine double-oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R./PRISONERS OF WAR" mark nicely placed on the front. The letter was sent on behalf of the 'many motherless children' of a "Jean Dawson Marshall, Homme d'Industrie a ete Naufrage sur la Cote de St. Valery sur un Batiment Anglais le 18 Fev. 1807" asking for his return because his exchange had previously been agreed but another had been sent in error in his place...! Rare Free letter between London and Paris at this date (by diplomatic bag?) and an unusual POW exchange error. [See MFPWE, p.163.]Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W.
