Escaper's immediate award WW2 Military Medal to 7890335 Dvr S. Ward R.E. minor edge bruising and contact marks, good fine. Sam Ward's MM was announced in the London Gazette dated 26th March 1942. With copied citation:
"Driver Ward was captured in Kalamata and taken by train towards Germany. He jumped off the train after crossing the Serbian frontier on 13th July and walked back to Salonica, taking four days to reach the frontier. A further month's walking brought him to Ianoros where he met other escapers.
They stole a boat and after two and a half days rowing reached the island of Lemnos, where they spent two days and then rowed on to Imbros. Here they were taken by Turkish police to the mainland and eventually reached Ismir.
This escape was specially meritorious as Dvr Ward was entirely alone and endured great hardship during the first part of his journey."
Sam Ward was taken POW during the fall of Greece on 28th April 1941 while serving with 292nd A. Field Coy. (See photo) (R)
