L.S. Lowry Limited Edition "Peel Park, Salford, 1947"
5875 - A Limited Edition by L.S. Lowry titled "Peel Park, Salford, 1947" It was published as a numbered edition of only 75 worldwide plus two "Master Printers Proofs" of which this is number 1 (MPP1). Supplied with authentication certificate (signed by the Master Printer) along with insurance replacement valuation for £1650 (free of charge) and biographical details on L.S. Lowry. Professionally mounted and framed. Condition is mint. Attending the Salford College of Art in the Peel Building (now part of the University of Salford) between 1915 and 1928, Lowry spent many hours in this park located behind the school and once said:"From the start I have been fond of this view and have put it in many paintings. You know that I never paint in this spot, but look for a long time, make drawings and think" Lowry used a very basic range of colours, which he mixed on his palette. Lowry preferred it this way, he was in absolute control of all the colours and tones he could achieve and this allowed him to concentrate on composition, perspective and subject matter. The scene is brought to life by his so called 'matchstick' people who swarm like ants through the park. In the crowd of people there are many different characters each doing a different activity. At the upper right is Salford Museum and Art Gallery, and Library, and below the portico is the bandstand with its red roof. At the top left centre stands the Victoria Arch (now demolished) which was built to commemorate a visit of Queen Victoria to the park. H: 85cm W: 134cm D: 4cm
