Edward, Duke of Windsor (1894-1972) and Wallis, Duchess of Windsor (1895-1986) autographed photograph portrait by Dorothy Wilding, signed by both sitters and dated '1956', also signed by the photographer and bearing a studio label verso, numbered '3259 A', image size 23 by 17.5cm, mounted within a silver Cartier frame with the late Duke's crest, 27.5 by 22.7cm overall.
Provenance: Privately owned, Clipsham House, Lincolnshire, believed to have been a gift to Leonora Corbett, an English actress, who was also the mistress of Egmont van Zuylen van Nyevelt (of the Rothschild family). Corbett was socialised with a range of celebrities from George Bernard Shaw Vivien Leigh. The photograph was possibly given to Corbett in Paris or New York. Corbett owned an apartment at the Waldorf Astoria (she later rented it to Marilyn Monroe).
The photograph has become attached/glued to the glass of the frame, to all its four corners, some tears are visible in those four corners. There are some areas of discolouration to the photograph, two flies also trapped under the glass. Wear and handling marks to the frame.
