A 19th century marine ivory gaming box in the form of a barrel, inlaid with abalone shell and baleen, containing three dice, inscribed 'J Walsh, Fox, 1864', 4.5cms high.

Possibly for a game known as grand hazard, chuck-a-luck or birdcage, played with three dice. The yacht Fox was engaged in the Danish trade with Greenland between 1864 and 1905, eventually grounded in Qeqertarsuaq Harbour in Greenland in 1912.  She formally sailed in the search of Captain Sir John Franklin in 1857-1859.
