PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND C.D.S ON COVER TO G.B. EXCEPTIONALLY WITH LONDON "PACKET LETTER"; Fine 1 Aug. 1818 E from Charlottetown to London endorsed P[repai]d to Halifax 8[d] in red with an unusually clear PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND/Aug:1/1818 1st-Type Charlottetown cds on the front, as well as a partial HALIFAX transit cds (20 Aug). It was carried on the British Packet ship Queensbury (ex NY) to Falmouth; at London (17 Sept. cds) it was charged 2/4, which was the standard 1s-3d Packet rate plus 11d inland from Falmouth to London, apparently also plus a further 2d for local London delivery. Most exceptionally (the only example recorded?) it also has the boxed London PACKET LETTER mark on the front (there was no Falmouth CANADA/F mark and the AMERICA/F mark seems to have been used primarily on U.S. mails). Of Exhibition Quality. [Ex Steinhart, 2005 & ex Hugh Wood, 2020.]Cross Reference: TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, SHIP LETTERS, NOVA SCOTIA
