It is estimated that 300,000 horses were on the streets of London in 1900 and their treatment was variable.
The Cart Horse Parade was established in 1885 with the aim of encouraging the owners of horses to take pride in their animals in a formal annual parade. A second annual parade, the Van Horse Parade started in 1904. The two parades merged into a single Easter Monday parade in 1966.
