£4,800
English School ( late 19th century), a cricket match at The Oval, Kennington, unsigned oil on canvas, depicting players in breeches, 49 cm x 59 cm in a gilt frame. The Oval, now home to Surrey Cricket Club, was opened circa 1846 following the expulsion of the Montpelier Cricket Club (formed 1796) from their home in Walworth. The site had been a market garden immediately prior to becoming a cricket ground, and the (capriccio) buildings of the market garden can be seen in the painting, which were then used as a pavilion. The tower of St Matthew's Church, Brixton, is depicted to the left.
Private collection, deceased London estate. Ex lot 118, Christie's, 18th July 2002. The work bears similarities to an earlier picture: https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/surrey-and-kent-playing-the-game-of-cricket-at-the-oval-1839-unknown/PgGxSddtDYyIFQ
