An important Silver mounted African Wild Boar tusk table lighter, with inscription "Presented to Brig Gen Sir J A Byrne ....on opening of the new premises of the National Bank of India, Nairobi, 1931". The lid with a silver wild boar finial. Marked "D Ltd Silver" with an anchor. Joseph Byrne served in the Boer War, later in 1916 he was made Deputy Adjutant-General, Irish Command during the Easter Rising and was made Inspector General of the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1916. In 1922 he was appointed Governor of Seychelles and in 1931 was made Governor of Kenya. He was known for appointing European educated Africans to as many posts as possible and upgraded hospitals and prisons in Nairobi & Mombasa. His lack of sympathy for the European settlers made him less popular amongst that community,
