A LARGE MAMLUK ENGRAVED BRASS BASIN, EGYPT OR SYRIA, LATE 15TH/ EARLY 16TH CENTURY

of deep rounded form with everted rim, profusely engraved to the exterior with four inscription-filled cartouches interspersed by roundels containing heraldic blazons, all on a ground of split-palmette interlace, a band of trefoil motifs around the foot, the interior with roundels and partial cartouches filled with vegetal and geometric interlace

Inscriptions: a verse from a poem in Arabic and the owner's name, mimma 'umila bi-rasm al-mu'allim muhammad ibn al-hajj muhyi al-din yarju al-maghfara min..., 'what was made for the teacher Muhammad ibn al-Hajj Muhyi al-Din. He wishes forgiveness from...'.
