The Mk 2 Jaguar, introduced in 1959, was a fast and capable saloon. It came with a 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8 litre XK engine. The 3.4 Litre and 3.8 Litre cars were fitted with twin SU HD6 carburettors and the 2.4 Litre with twin Solex carburettors. Compared to the Mark 1, the appearance of the car was transformed by an increase of 18% in cabin glass area. The car was re-engineered above the waistline, slender front pillars allowed a wider windscreen and the rear window almost wrapped around to the enlarged side windows. The radiator grille was amended and larger side, tail and fog lamps repositioned. Inside a new heating system was fitted with ducted air to the rear compartment. There was an improved instrument layout that became standard for all Jaguar cars until the XJ Series II. From its introduction the Jaguar MkII developed a strong following in many walks of life. With wonderful styling and a race-bred engine and four-wheel disc brakes, the ability to carry five passengers at great speed, the car proved to be a great success.
This 1960 Jaguar MK2 3.8 Manual is an early example with the desirable recessed sun visors, pendant throttle pedal and smooth matt black centre dash section. The heritage certificate shows the car being UK built and then sent to South Africa direct from the factory. The car was originally painted in Cornish Grey and was believed to have been sold direct to the South African Police. The vendor has done some research and in 1960 the police did have a few 3.8 MK2s which were grey. The car is also fitted with a large CAV Dynamo and very large regulator, which is also believed to be police specification.
The underside of the car is very sound and most bushes, ball joints and suspension parts are visibly recent. The car is also fitted with four pot front brake calipers and ventilated discs. The rear brakes have also been recently replaced, along with Koni Classic shock absorbers. The engine runs very well and also benefits from 2 inch SU Carbs and a stainless steel exhaust. The interior is excellent, with new leather seat coverings, fully refurbished wood, new headlining and carpets. The car body work is in generally very good, but has some micro blister in a few places and some small areas of corrosion, but the sills and structure are very good. This is a very usable and good looking car that just needs a small amount of work to bring it up to an excellent standard.
