Henry Robins, British (1820 - 1892)"H.M.S. Thunderer," O.O.C., depicting a Devastation class ironclad turret ship on rough seas off the Mediterranean coast with other boats, approx. 45cms x 75cms (17 1/2" x 29 1/2") signed lower left and dated "H. Robins 1880" with inscribed gilt mount and oak frame. (1)úHMS Thunderer and her sister ship were the first two ocean-going capital ships that did not carry sails, and which mounted their entire main armament on top of the hull rather than inside it. Launched in 1872, she suffered two serious accidents within the next few years, and had the reputation of being an unlucky ship; however, with advancing years she became popular with the British public. After a chequered career, she was taken out of service in 1907 and scrapped in 1909. Beresford was her executive officer from May 1877 until April 1878, when she served on the Channel station.
