1857 (May 31) Entire letter from Chumie Post, British Kaffraria, to London, the address panel headed "From No 2822 Cr Sergt S. Doyle 45 Regiment" and countersigned by the Commanding Officer, franked at the 1d soldiers rate by 1d pale brick-red on deeply blued paper (S.G. 1, touched at base), carried by private ship and charged 4d with circular "SOLDIERS & SEAMANS LETTER / 4 / BY SHIP", backstamped at Grahams Town (June 2), Cape Town and London (Aug 6). Minor staining, otherwise fine and scarce, very few Cape soldiers letters recorded with the Soldiers & Seamans Letter By Ship 4d charge mark, with Holcombe Certificate (1985). Photo on Page 84.
