BOULOUPARIS - EARLY UNDATED 2-RING MARK + boxed "PD" ON 40c RED SINGLE-FRANKING COVER; Fine 29 Aug. 1877 env. to Lons le Saunier with a very fine rare undated 2-ring "N.C. POSTES/BOULOUPARI" mark (very early usage) beside the marginal Type Sage 40c Red (good to huge margins all round though rather rough in places - not tied but clearly belongs as its partial 31 Aug. cds exactly matches the one alongside) unusually placed over a superb large boxed "PD" mark (presumably struck at Boulouparis and the stamp applied in transit at Noumea?), having a fine red octagonal "POS. AN. V. SUEZ PAQ. F/1 MARS.1" d.s. nearby. Remarkably early stamped cover from this small PO [which opened in 1871 but for which no mark has been recorded until Dec. 1876]. Important Exhibition Item.
