The 20th Punjabis fought on the left flank of the Indian Brigade at the battle of Tel-El-Kebir in 1882. In honour of their good service in Egypt, the Duke of
Cambridge (Commander-in-Chief of the British Army and a cousin of Queen Victoria) was appointed as their honorary colonel in 1883, and the regiment was retitled as the 20th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Punjab Regiment of Bengal Infantry.
