HENRY ADDINGTON, VISCOUNT SIDMOUTH (1759-1844), BRITISH PRIME MINISTER (1801-04): Treaty of Amiens - an important letter, dated 1 Oct. 1801, from the Prime Minister, to William Henry, Duke of Clarence (later King William IV), written the very next day after Addington's Foreign Secretary, Robert Jenkinson, Lord Hawkesbury (later Lord Liverpool), and Louis Guillaume Otto, the French Commissary for Prisoners of War in London (and under direct instructions from Bonaparte), signed the preliminary agreement in London, published the following day. Subject of the letter relating to the future Treaty of Amiens re "I have the happiness of acquaint ing your Royal Highness that preliminaries of peace between this country and France were signed this evening by Lord Hawkesbury and Mr Otto" The Treaty of Amiens temporarily ended hostilities between Britain & the French Republic.
