Cat, worn to ‘circumvent’ the Venetian laws concerning sexual behaviour, 15th century law stated that if you wore a mask you had to act accordingly. This meant that a man wearing a Cat mask could engage in relationships with other men and he could not be accused of any wrongdoing as he was acting exactly as demanded by his mask
