Reads:
The scene is the lower part of Platteklep Gorge looking down at the town and Bay. On the left is Signal Hill. from the way I remember this place very clearly from my childhood. The small stream, which runs down the mountain, widens here to form some pools. The building was called the wash house (I think). My father used to take me for walks. We would have our “peissi” higher up near a small pool whether I would watch the tadpoles or young frogs. When we lived in one of the terrace houses in Hatfield St there were no facilities for laundering. The coloured / Malay washerwomen used to arrive with a large basket on her head. The laundry was counted, the list agreed, and off they went to this spot where it was washed. A few days later it reappeared in the basket spotterly clean and trowed. When I left home the houses were slowly creeping up the lower slope of the mountains. I wonder whether they have reached this spot.
