FIRST DAY COVER OF THE INTRODUCTION OF FINES FOR UNPAID/UNDERPAID MAIL TO CANADA; Remarkable and attractive stampless 1 Apr. 1859 env. (minor edge wear) from "IRVINE" (clearly dated 1 April cds on back) to Ramsay CW "Per Steamer from L'pool" and so with v. fine British "10d" Claim mark of Liverpool on the front (First Day Usage for 7d British claim for postage + half the 6d Fine); the 10d mark crossed out in Canada and the full "1/5½" rate charged (the usual 10d deficient postage but also the full Fine of 6d sterling = 7½d Currency). Carried on the first sailing subject to this new fine; by the S.S. 'Europa' (left Liverpool on 2 Apr. 1859; confirmed by 2 fine Liverpool backstamps and 19 Apr. Montreal transit backstamp).
