NEWFOUNDLAND - UNDER-FRANKED COVER TO G.B. WITH ST. JOHNS "DEFICIENT..." MARK & H.S. "3"; Attractive Nov. 1873 env. (very thin paper and so with some understandable faults) from ? (faint red cds on front beneath small "UC/LONDON" cds) via St. Johns (cds on back and tying stamps) with Newfoundland 2c Green + 1c Dull Purple tied by corks & cds's but the 3c only covered the inland rate and so also having a fine small "DEFICIENT [1½d]/FINE____[1½]" mark of St. Johns on the front neatly struck beside a v. fine h.s. "3" (not recorded on a Transatlantic cover before) which was crossed through in GB and replaced by the final m/s "4?" Postage Due charge. Exceptional item from Newfoundland.
